The Advanced Diploma of Building Surveying offers a practical option to learn about the roles and responsibilities that relate directly to the functions of the Building Surveyor. The course is offered online which allows you to work within your own environment in your own time. Our enrolments are open all year round which means that you can start whenever you are ready. The Advanced Diploma is offered as 22 Units of Competency that cover the mandatory 19 core units and 3 elective units from the CPC – Construction, Plumbing and Services Training Package. This qualification reflects the role of Building Surveyors or Certifiers who apply knowledge of compliance requirements and construction methods and materials to the implementation of statutory building surveying requirements or to the provision of advisory building surveying services. The scope of work undertaken by Building Surveyors varies across jurisdictions and can include: Providing code-consulting advice to clients on the compliance requirements for proposed building developments Processing Planning and Development Applications• Conducting mandatory construction inspections Auditing buildings and following up areas of non-compliance Issuing Certificates of Occupancy. Building Surveyors require an understanding of relevant compliance requirements as well as traditional, new and emerging construction methods and materials. Building Surveyors make a significant contribution to the development and construction of the built environment, often working in collaboration with specialist consultants to assess and to ensure safety of building occupants. Building Surveyors work in a highly regulated environment and must carry out their role ethically and according to a legislative and regulatory requirements. Across the program you cover legislation, underpinning theory and practical surveying skills for both residential and commercial buildings. The Unit of Competency clustering has been separated into two parts being: Skill Set (CPCS00005) for Residential buildings up to three storeys (9 units of competency) and Commercial and elective units that make up the remainder of the Advanced Diploma of Building Surveying.
Prerequisites
The Training Package does not list any required prerequisites. That said, as an Advanced Diploma (Level 6) AQF qualification, there is an expectation that you possess a good command of the English language, as well as good literacy and numeracy skills. You should also possess good computer skills and the ability to research on your own. As a Building Surveyor, you will be expected to be able to competently read and communicate legislative requirements. It is also beneficial if you also hold: Good communication skills and experience working in teams- Able to demonstrate problem solving in a work role Good time management and organisation skills Be responsible for your own learning and professional development Access to and able to use computers and various programs and technology ******** Please feel free to contact us if you have any concerns in relation to your language, lite racy and numeracy skills (LNN) so that we can assist prior to enrolling. As part of the course, you will be required to inspect buildings under construction, and to audit existing buildings. While we make every effort to assist you with this, the onus to arrange any such inspections and audits will be on you. Please also note, that it is generally a requirement that all those who enter a building site have had some form of training or have received appropriate authority. For example, in NSW one must hold a white card (or general construction induction card) before entering a building site. The responsibility to obtain the relevant training and authority is on you. The College of Professional Development cannot accept any responsibility for your actions or those of another when entering a building site, and it is recommended that you seek advice in relation to insurance in this regard.
Delivery Mode
The course is delivered online which allows you to work in your own environment in your own time. You will be given a Training Plan and Study Schedule with recommended deadlines to help you achieve your goal of obtaining a qualification in a timely manner. While there is no minimum time for you to complete the course, you will be expected to progress through the course with set milestone dates that will be specified in your training plan. Failure to meet the set milestones could lead to withdrawal from the course. You are offered a maximum 3-years from the date of enrolment to complete the course, but you can complete sooner if you so choose. Our experience would suggest that it takes most people approximately 2 years to complete the Advanced Diploma. As part of the course, you will be required to inspect buildings under construction, and to audit existing buildings. While we make every effort to assist you in this, the onus to arrange any such inspections and audits will be on you. The learning resources and assessments tasks were developed by current practising Building Surveyors, and therefore reflect real case building surveying functions from a practical perspective. Those who are fortunate enough to be working in the industry are offered the opportunity to use real case scenarios to demonstrate their competency, which in turn allows to learn workplace practice, while adding value to their employer. Non-compulsory webinar and face to face tutorials are also offered, any student who is having difficulties are offered the opportunity to arrange a private tutorial with their trainer as required. Assessments are designed to have a workplace focus but some of the assessments tasks will need to be completed in your own time. This commitment will be different for each person. Feedback is provided through discussion with your assessor, written comments and marks. There are opportunities to resubmit additional assessments or evidence if there are gaps in the submitted work. We support you through this process. Your previous experience and education will be considered through a formal recognition process. We will be working with you to identify what you have learned at work, from other trade or related courses and from life experience.

We recommend that you contact the AIBS directly to establish the requirements for accreditation as a building surveyor. The Royal Institute of Charted Surveyors (RICS) offers an accreditation scheme for Building Surveyors that is recognised by the Queensland and South Australian Government. The Advanced Diploma of Building Surveying as offered by the College of Professional Development is recognised by the RICS accreditation scheme for Level 2 and Level 3 Building Surveyor .The Australian Institute of Building Surveying recently amended their accreditation scheme to require a AQF Level 7 qualification for Level 2 Building Surveyor. Therefore, as an AQF Level 6 qualification, while the Advanced Diploma remains a recognised qualification for a Level 3 Building Surveyor, AIBS have recently advised that the Advanced Diploma will no longer be a recognised qualification for Level 2. AIBS have advised that those enrolled prior to 30 December 2025 will be provided with a four-year period to gain accreditation with AIBS. Those wishing to be accredited as a Level two Building Surveyor with the AIBS are now required to complete a 3-year university degree as a minimum qualification. Any inquiries about the requirements for accreditation as a Level two with the AIBS should be directed to them. Please note, as indicated above, the Advanced Diploma continues to be a recognised qualification for Level 2 by the relevant government legislation in all jurisdictions except for the ACT and NT. We recommend that you consider applying to RICS or the relevant Government Department directly if you decide to peruse the practical option that the Advanced Diploma option offers.

More About This Course
Required Inspection and Audit of Buildings The Training Package requires one to demonstrate the ability to inspect buildings of all classes, at various stages of construction, and after completion. To achieve this, anyone wishing to enrol and complete the course will need to be able to arrange their own access to buildings of all classes during and post construction. Those unable to do this may not be able to complete the course. Course Duration. It is a condition of enrolment that those enrolled in the NSW Government subsidised CPC60121Advanced Diploma of Building Surveying complete the qualification within two years of enrolment. We are not in a position to provide any extension to the course completion date. As the course is offered online, it can be completed sooner, but in no less than 12 months. Course Progress. Students are required to achieve milestones as outlined in their Training and Study Schedule. Failure to do so will compromise their continued and enrolment. Importantly continued funding is based on achieving these milestones.
